Overcoming Procrastination |

Some of us love to rush around doing things at the last minute. Many of us often say to ourselves, "I should do that tomorrow". Procrastination means to "defer action", but very rarely does it result in positive results.
Procrastination isn't only about deciding to delay doing something but also choosing to do something else. Perhaps it's watching television instead of going to the gym. Maybe even surfing the internet instead of visiting a family member or friend that we have not seen in some time. We often say to ourselves, "I really should do that". What is it that makes us procrastinate? It is a matter of habit? Or are we avoiding fears of failure or inadequate self-confidence? The answer is both. Here are some suggestions to overcome procrastination no matter what the cause.
REFRAMING- Is your task that lies ahead a "should" or a "want"? Many times the process that will lead us to our goals is a "should" and the goal itself is a "want". Focus on the "want"; when you achieve the goal the "should" part of the process will not seem so bad.
PRIORITIZE- This goes beyond the obvious of doing what is most important or needed first. Remember, it's easy for us to complete tasks that are enjoyable to us even if we don't have the amounts of energy and drive, tackle the tasks that have a lot of "should". Save the "wants" for other times to enjoy.
MANAGEMENT/DELEGATION- Ask yourself two things: 1) Do I really need to do this? 2) Can someone else do it for me? Sounds bad I know, but important questions nonetheless. Life is busy and hectic; make it as easy as you can on yourself.
BITE SIZE PIECES- Try to break down complicated or overwhelming tasks into "micro-tasks" that are more manageable. It decreases anxiety and completing a part of a task increases the likelihood that you will complete the other parts.
Whether procrastination or inability to meet your goals is a matter of habit or an issue with self-confidence and fear, you can certainly overcome it. If you find yourself not achieving what you are capable of then seek help. A therapist can guide you to solutions that will help you resolve these problems and not only accomplish your "should", but more importantly your "want".
